PhD and Postdoctoral Positions in Quantum non-Gaussian Physics

Job type:

Application deadline:

Sunday, April 10, 2022

The group led by Prof. Radim Filip at Palacky University (http://muj.optol.cz/filip/) is offering positions for highly creative, open-minded and engaged

two PhD students and two junior postdoctoral researchers

in theoretical quantum physics with quantum non-Gaussian states of bosonic systems (for example, trapped atoms and ions, superconducting circuits, mechanical oscillators, travelling light etc.). The particular choice of topic can be flexibly adjusted to match the applicant's skills and other favourable factors (available experiments in the collaborating labs and international grants). The profound practice of programming in Python and Qutip/Julia is expected. The aim is to propose and analyse feasible experiments to develop and verify new nonlinear bosonic effects and apply them to quantum sensing and quantum computing.
Palacky University providing this opportunity has a significant research infrastructure in quantum optics in Central Europe. It offers modern dynamical research focusing on frontiers of quantum physics in the abovementioned directions. This research is supported by broad international collaborations, systematic training, networking, and outreach activities, fully connecting the team to European Quantum Technology.

The diverse and international team has over 25 members (faculty, permanent research staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate students). This environment provides individual researcher career development supported by experienced senior researchers in an innovative and inspirational atmosphere. It involves close and broad collaborations with worldwide laboratories. The research will include individual analytical and numerical work and direct communication with experimentalists.

The applicant must have graduated no more than two years before the application to qualify for the PhD position. The PhD study lasts four years, has a flexible start, and we additionally encourage at least three months of our paid internship before the beginning. We require a high level of English, profound and practical knowledge of quantum physics, deep practice of programming in Python and Qutip/Julia, and a previous master's thesis in theoretical physics. The monthly salary follows the standard for all PhD students: 40,000 CZK before tax (approx. 1600 EUR).

The applicant must hold a doctoral degree awarded no later than four years before the application for the junior postdoc position. The postdoc position lasts two years and has a flexible start, a three-month probation period, and an evaluation after one year. An extension of the contract for additional years purely depends on the research performance. We expect a high level of English, especially in research communication and manuscript writing. The applicant must have at least two first-authored papers in quantum physics journals with IF>2.9, deep practice of programming in Python and Qutip/Julia, and a previous PhD thesis in Theoretical Quantum Physics. The monthly salary follows the standard for all postdocs: 55,000 CZK before tax (2200 EUR).

Evaluation of applications will begin immediately. Inquiries may be addressed to Prof. Radim Filip (filip@optics.upol.cz).
Interested candidates should email (i) a CV including a complete list of publications together with a description of the author's contribution, (ii) a statement on their research experiences, interests, and plans (within two pages), (iii) a Master (PhD) Thesis in pdf and (iv) a recommendation letter from the last position. The application must be sent to filip@optics.upol.cz.
