Quantum entanglement which is the key ingredient for the storage and distribution of quantum information among the fundamental physical constituents, was first noticed as a key feature of the quantum world seventy-five years ago by Schrodinger. Since then, the long road of development of the theory and applications of entanglement has led to remarkable concepts and technological prospects. Along this long road have also spruced up many surprises, paradoxes and fascinating puzzles. The ongoing state-of-art in this field currently progresses at such a rapid pace, that at times it is prudent to pause for a bit, just in order to take stock of the major strides of development in the theoretical and experimental aspects of quantum entanglement occurring from so many different sides corresponding to diverse physical arenas.

With the above perspective, S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, India, will organize a five day symposium in Kolkata during 6th—10th January 2011 to commemorate the 75 years of quantum entanglement with presentations from leading experts from around the world on foundations and information theoretic applications of entanglement. With the aim of advancing our holistic understanding of the field in view of the proliferation of its many sub-branches, the agenda will be based upon, though not limited to the following major topical themes listed below. Such a meeting will be organized here several years after a couple of very successful international conferences "Winter Institutes on Foundations of Quantum Theory, Quantum Optics, and Quantum Information Processes" held in the years 2000 and 2002. The present symposium will be part of, and also a keynote event of the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences.
