PenteQost Spring School on Quantum Science 2025

Dates: 6–10 June 2025
Location: University of Siegen, Germany
Registration Deadline: 4 May 2025 (23:59 Berlin time) – Apply Here

Overview

PenteQost-25 is the second edition of the interdisciplinary and international undergraduate spring school on the Fundamentals of Quantum Science. Building on the success of the inaugural event, the school will once again be hosted by the University of Siegen, taking place from Friday afternoon, June 6, to Tuesday noon, June 10, 2025. Timed to align with the Pentecost weekend, the program minimizes conflicts with regular semester schedules.

The school is open to undergraduate students from diverse fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering, offering a stimulating academic environment with lectures, interactive discussions, and collaborative sessions.

Topics Covered

Quantum Foundations & Open Quantum Systems
Quantum Information & Statistical Inference
Integrable Quantum Systems
Optical clocks and precision spectroscopy
Quantum Computational Complexity

Lecturers

  • Andrea Smirne (University of Milan) – Open quantum systems, non-Markovian dynamics, quantum metrology.
  • Michalis Skotiniotis (University of Granada) – Quantum information theory, statistical inference.
  • Olalla Castro-Alvaredo (City, University of London) – Integrable quantum field theory, Bethe Ansatz, Generalised Hydrodynamics.
  • Sevag Gharibian (Paderborn University) – Quantum computational complexity, QMA-completeness, entanglement theory.
  • Judith Elena Jordan (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt) – Optical clocks, precision spectroscopy, trapped-ion-based quantum technologies.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of linear algebra and analysis is recommended, along with familiarity with fundamental quantum mechanics. Suggested preparatory materials include:

“Quantum Computation and Quantum Information” – M. Nielsen & I. L. Chuang (Chapters 1–2)
“Quantum Computing for the Very Curious” & “Quantum Mechanics Distilled” – A. Matuschak & M. Nielsen
“Introduction to Quantum Information Science” – A. Ekert (Lectures 1–4)

Target Audience

Undergraduate students in physics, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering.
Graduate students with advanced knowledge are welcome but should note the introductory nature of the school.

Location & Travel

Siegen is centrally located in Germany, approximately 125 km from Frankfurt and 90 km from Cologne, with excellent train and road connectivity. Nearby international airports include Frankfurt, Cologne, and Düsseldorf. The city offers a vibrant cultural scene with restaurants, cafes, theaters, and concert halls.
