Postdoc on quantum computing / quantum engineering in Grenoble

Application deadline:

Wednesday, April 30, 2025

Job type:

The newly created “Maison du Quantique - House of Quantum, Grenoble Alps” (MdQ Alps) is hiring a quantum engineer to work at the interface between the quantum platforms that are being developed in France, quantum algorithms, quantum simulators and quantum-inspired algorithms to explore potential quantum advantage for fundamental and practical applications.

This is a 3-year postdoc position in the theory groups of the PHELIQS and MEM labs, University Grenoble Alpes, CEA Grenoble. Apart from the theory groups, the labs have a number of experimental groups working on various aspects of quantum computing, mesoscopic physics, and material physics. Beyond that, MdQ Alps gathers other quantum theory and experiment groups from the CNRS (located nearby) working on solid-state quantum technologies.

What we expect:
  • PhD in theoretical physics
  • Experience working with many-body quantum systems
  • (optional) Experience with open quantum systems
  • Open-mindedness to work on both academic and industrial problems
  • Independence
What we offer:
  • Vibrant and diverse research group
  • Access to quantum computers and powerful emulators of those
  • Interaction with industrial partners, giving the possibility to work on both fundamental academic and application-oriented industrial problems
  • A vibrant city offering many cultural activities, lovely bars and delicious restaurants. Located in the heart of the Alps, Grenoble is the paradise for all outdoor enthusiasts.
The mission:

Quantum computing is looking for its “killer app” that will provide a genuine advantage with the quantum machines that will be available in a not too far future. The MdQ Alps is accompanying this quest, in particular in connection to the hardware available within the national HQI (Hybrid Quantum Initiative) consortium but also using new generations of classical algorithms, such as tensor networks, that can complement or sometimes even replace quantum approaches.

The candidate will carry out research in quantum algorithms and/or quantum-inspired algorithms and/or the underlying quantum systems. Particular attention will be devoted to their applicability to the actual applications of interests to the industrial stakeholders that participate to the MdQ Alps. The goal is to identify one or more scientifically relevant applications among those, understand the potential for quantum advantage and develop them up to an actual demonstration on existing quantum hardware or a quantum emulator.

The position is expected to start at a negotiable date in 2025.
