Applications are invited for the above post to work with Dr Gerardo Adesso at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Univeristy of Nottingham (UK) on a FQXI-funded project entitled “Quantum Informational Framework for Cybernetics”. The successful applicant will specialise in theoretical research on quantum information, quantum foundations, and complex quantum systems.
The main goal of this project is to lay the informational foundation for a quantum theory of cybernetics. This will be achieved by investigating and generalizing the law of requisite variety, a founding principle for the science of regulatory processes, adopting the general formalism of quantum information theory. The emerging meta-theory aims to collectively explain the behaviour of physical, as well as social and biological phenomena, where quantum strategies can be recognised as playing a fundamental functional role. Ultimately, this programme can shed light on the notion of complexity itself, which could be related to the density of information that can be stored in a regulatory system, and might play a nontrivial role for its adaptation.
This position is available from 1 February 2014 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months (full-time) or 24 months (0.5 FTE part-time)
