PhD Scholarship: Complexity and universality in quantum scattering and sampling with PsiQuantum and Macquarie University (Future Leaders in Quantum Computing Program).
This PhD Scholarship offers a generous stipend of A$41,753 per year (2025 rate) for up to 4 years. Open to domestic and international students.
This PhD project will cover interference - a defining feature of quantum mechanics and an important resource in quantum information technologies. Boson sampling, for example, hinges on the fact that interferometers natively sample probability distributions given by the symmetric representation of the unitary group, which in turn is given by computationally ‘hard’ matrix permanents. This opens a wide array of interesting mathematical connections between representation theory, combinatorics, and universality in quantum scattering problems.
In this PhD project we will explore these connections and their implications for quantum information and computation. A key question is whether these generalisations might be practically useful beyond demonstrating computational ‘supremacy’.
This PhD project would suit: A mathematically sophisticated student who is interested in the quickly growing field of quantum technologies.
This scholarship is funded and delivered by the ARC Training Centre for Future Leaders in Quantum Computing, in partnership with Sydney Quantum Academy.
This project is delivered in partnership with PsiQuantum and Macquarie University.
About PsiQuantum
PsiQuantum has one mission: To build and deploy the first useful quantum computers. In 2016, PsiQuantum founders uncovered a viable path to build large-scale, fault-tolerant systems by taking a photonics approach and leveraging the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry and other existing infrastructure. Nearly nine years later, PsiQuantum is building thousands of wafers of quantum chips, testing production cryogenic cabinets and developing fault-tolerant algorithms to deploy on our first systems.
