Post-doctoral position in Single atom - single photon interaction (Experiment)

Job type:

Application deadline:

Thursday, October 30, 2008

ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences is a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona), devoted to the research and education of the optical and photonic sciences, at the highest international level. In the research group "Quantum optics and quantum information with single atoms and photons" led by Jürgen Eschner we study experimentally the interaction of single trapped, laser-cooled ions and atoms with single photons. We are equally interested in the fundamental properties of such systems and in their application for quantum technologies. Visit www.icfo.es/groups/jeschner for further information.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher for an ongoing project in which single trapped Ca+ ions interact resonantly with entangled, time-correlated photons from a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source, with the objective of exploring controlled single-photon absorption and photon-to-atom entanglement transfer.

Eligibility and Conditions
Candidates must hold an internationally-recognized PhD-equivalent degree (or evidence of its completion in the near future) in a field of science related to quantum optics/ physics.
No restrictions of citizenship apply to the ICFO post-doctoral contracts.
Experience is required in at least one of the fields of quantum light sources, trapping and cooling of atoms, or laser spectroscopy.
The project forms part of the European Integrated Project SCALA (www.scala-ip.org), the Marie Curie Research Training Network EMALI (www.emali.eu), and the Spanish 'Consolider' network project QOIT (www.qoit.es).
The minimum duration of the position is 1 year, but a longer stay is strongly preferred; mobility is a further requirement. Salary depending on experience.

Application procedure
Potential applicants may contact Prof. Jürgen Eschner (juergen.eschner@icfo.es) for further questions regarding the scientific aspects of the vacancy.
The formal application should be submitted by e-mail to: icfojobs@icfo.es. E-mail submissions must include the mailing label “SASP” and your last name printed before the label. Suitable candidates are requested to submit:
· A presentation letter with a declaration of interest,
· A Curriculum Vitae, including full address, a contact phone number and e-mail address,
· The contact e-mail of three potential referees.
Applications can also be submitted by post to the Post-Doc Screening Committee (Ref. SASP).
Candidates should be willing to be contacted by phone during the selection process.

Deadlines
The call will remain open until suitable candidates are identified.
