Postdoc position in Experimental Quantum Optics

Job type:

Application deadline:

Friday, October 23, 2020

The Experimental Quantum Optics group (https://research.tuni.fi/eqo/) is looking for a motivated postdoc to work on quantum experiments studying fundamental features of photons and their interaction with matter. Besides performing research on the highest-level, the positions will provide the opportunity to develop and refine high-tech skills in quantum technologies, photonics, programming and data analysis.

As we are committed to promoting diversity within our staff, we would like to encourage all interested applicants, irrespective of their gender and backgrounds to apply.

Who we are?

The Experimental Quantum Optics group is a diverse research group that was established in January 2019. Our research focuses on structuring single photons to study high-dimensional quantum states and enhance quantum information schemes. We also develop and implement novel ways of light-matter interactions in the quantum regime, thereby combining findings from nonlinear optics, quantum plasmonics, and quantum optics. The work will embrace a broad range of different tasks, ranging from simulating and calculating quantum optical effects, to developing novel tools for photonics and plasmonics and implementing quantum experiments in newly established laboratories equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The group is embedded into a strong photonics research hub at the Tampere University, Finland, with activities ranging from nanofabrication, nonlinear optics of novel media, theoretical optics, metamaterials, high power fiber lasers to the development of new techniques for optical spectroscopy (https://www.tuni.fi/en/about-us/photonics). Tampere University also leads the Photonics Flagship initiative PREIN of the Academy of Finland (https://prein.fi/). Hence, our research takes place in a world-leading photonics research institution with collaborations within a large network of experts across the world.

Interested in joining?

Postdoctoral candidates must hold an internationally-recognized PhD degree (or have the PhD defense scheduled within the next couple of months) in experimental quantum optics, quantum plasmonics, or other fields of quantum research. Excellent written and spoken English skills are essential. Knowledge in programming languages, e.g. Python, Matlab, Labview or Lumerical etc. are highly appreciated and some expertise in the quantum information theory and quantum foundations are advantageous. The candidate should further like to work in an international, collaborative research group, enjoy working with colleagues (national & international) and help in supervising students and teaching tasks. Possible projects can include high-dimensional quantum optics experiments, quantum plasmonic studies, and atom optics. While there are plenty of ongoing projects, which will benefit from the postdoc's contributions, the candidate is also encouraged and supported in implementing her/his own ideas. The Postdoctoral position will be offered for 1-2 years with a possibility of extension and will be preferably filled beginning of 2021 with some flexibility in the starting date.

Please submit your application through the Tampere University's online recruitment system (link provided below). The closing date for applications is 23 October 2020 (at 23.59 EEST / 20.59 UTC).

Applications should include the following documents:

- Curriculum Vitae

- List of publications

- References from two people incl. full email address

- Motivation letter, including a short introduction of the applicant, previous research work and future plans.
