The Mathematical Quantum Information RIKEN Hakubi Research Team led by Bartosz Regula at RIKEN is recruiting postdoctoral researchers for a period of 2 years. The positions can begin as soon as possible.
The successful candidates will work on the project "Foundations of quantum resources: mathematical theory for the structure and applications of quantum phenomena", which is a broad and open-ended investigation of the mathematical foundations of quantum information, and will offer a large degree of flexibility.
Our main areas of research are: quantum resource theories, theory of entanglement, quantum information and communication theory, convex optimisation problems in quantum information, quantum foundations.
A topic of particular interest is classical and quantum Shannon theory. Candidates with a background and/or strong interest in this area will be prioritised.
What is required
- A PhD degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
- A strong track record of research in quantum information or closely related areas.
- Strong technical and analytical skills, independence, and self-motivation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. (Japanese is not required.)

- A salary of at least ¥550,000 JPY per month.
- Housing allowance (up to ¥40,000 per month, or ¥60,000 if living with a family), commuting allowance, and a relocation allowance.
- Travel/research funding of at least ¥1,300,000 per year.

- Flexible work location. Our main offices are located on the main RIKEN campus in Wako, Saitama (20–30 minutes from central Tokyo). However, we encourage a hybrid working mode, and partial remote work arrangements are available.
- Opportunities for collaborations in the RIKEN Centre for Quantum Computing and several other divisions of RIKEN.
- Support for applications to independent postdoctoral fellowships such as RIKEN’s Special Postdoctoral Researchers Program or the JSPS International Fellowship for Research in Japan. Successful applicants can use such fellowships to extend their stay in Japan.
