Postdoctoral Fellow in Quantum Communication - Sydney, Australia.

Job type:

Application deadline:

Thursday, June 9, 2022

Work type: Full time
Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia
Categories: Post doctoral research fellow

Position Summary:

Quantum communication is a translational technology that will make an impact on society long before quantum computation will. First commercial offerings of secure quantum communication solutions based on heavily attenuated laser pulses are already on the market. In this project, we plan to design a compact quantum communication system that could be deployed onboard a low-Earth-orbit satellite. The security of all communicated data will be at the forefront of the new design. The project will be largely theoretical in nature.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on all aspects of the design, including the development of novel protocols that can accommodate quantum communications, undertake detailed numerical simulations, and conduct performance evaluations of the proposed system under the arduous environment of Space. A solid understanding of quantum communication, both in the discrete variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) settings is required. A PhD related to theoretical aspects of quantum key distribution in the CV setting would be particularly valuable.
This project is funded both by The Australian Research Council and Northrop Grumman Corporation (USA), It is a collaboration between the University of New South Wales (UNSW) led by Prof. Robert Malaney, and the University of Queensland (UQ) led by Prof. Timothy Ralph. The Postdoctoral Fellow will be expected to work with all stakeholders, including Researchers from Northrop Grumman, and assist in the supervision of PhD students working on the project.
The position will be based at UNSW, reports to Prof. Robert Malaney, and has no direct reports.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include:
• Assist with the design of new protocols for combined classical and quantum communications.
• Research the performance evaluation of the new protocols over a satellite-to-ground channel, given the constraints imposed by the satellite configuration and operating conditions.
• Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals and progress reporting to other researchers and industry partners.
• Assist with the coordination of research activities and actively contribute to research outputs to meet project milestones.
• Assist with administrative functions primarily connected with the area of interests of the academic
• Contribute to the preparation of research proposal submissions to funding bodies and actively seek collaboration with industry partners as appropriate.
• Participate in and/or present at conferences and/or workshops relevant to the project as required.
• Comply with all the UNSW research policies including the UNSW Intellectual Property Policy
• Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Skills and Experience

• A completed PhD degree in physics or electrical engineering, or related discipline.
• Demonstrated research capability in quantum physics, as evidenced by a Master’s/PhD thesis, journal publications, conference proceedings, or internal reports.
• Demonstrated experience in advanced simulation of quantum information protocols.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of equal opportunity principles in a diverse, multi-cultural environment.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

Desirable Criteria
• Knowledge of classical communications (desirable).
• Knowledge of satellite communications (desirable).
