The research group of Presidential Young Professor Wen Wei Ho at the Department of Physics, National University of Singapore (NUS), is seeking highly motivated candidates at the PhD student and postdoctoral levels, with expertise and interests in theoretical nonequilibrium quantum many-body physics, quantum information science, as well as quantum simulation and computation.
About the research:
Research thrusts include, but are not limited to:
- Uncovering nonequilibrium quantum many-body phenomena realized within novel physical regimes enabled by current and emerging quantum technologies (cold atoms, Rydberg atoms, trapped ions, color defects etc.)
- Developing new theoretical frameworks to describe such phenomena, e.g., entanglement-based methods like tensor networks; quantum information theoretic ones;
- Developing applications for quantum technologies including quantum simulation and quantum state tomography.
We collaborate with world renowned experimental groups of cold atoms and Rydberg atoms. Previous research works by the principal investigator include developing a rigorous theory or prethermalization in quantum many-body systems, furthering the theory of time-crystals, and pioneering the concept of quantum many-body scars. About the positions:
For PhD candidates, the position is to begin August 1 2022 (start of first semester of the academic year), but a start-date of January (second semester) is possible. You will be sponsored by a generous NUS research scholarship, and provided benefits as well as travel funds for conferences and collaborations.
For postdoctoral candidates, the start-date is flexible though August 2022 is preferable. This research position comes with a competitive salary, benefits, and ample travel funds for conferences and collaborations. A PhD in physics or a closely related field is required.
Application procedure:
Interested applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. Ho directly (email: wenweiho.phy@gmail.com) and to provide the following: a cover letter with brief description of research interests, CV with list of publications, and contact information of at least two (preferably three) references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue till positions are filled. Questions are also to be sent directly to Prof. Ho, and are more than welcome.
About the location:
NUS is the Republic of Singapore's flagship university and a leading global university centered in Asia, being ranked 1st in Asia according to the QS Asia University Rankings 2022 and 11th worldwide according to the QS World University Rankings 2022. It is also host to the Centre for Quantum Technologies (PI not affiliated), a world leading research center in quantum science and technologies. Sunny, tropical Singapore is a vibrant, multicultural metropolis, located one degree north of the equator in Southeast Asia, and has been dubbed the "gateway to the east". It has four official languages (English, Mandarin Chinese, Malay and Tamil), with English being the main language.
