STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY, DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

Trapped Rydberg ions are a novel quantum system. By laser light, the outermost electron of trapped ions is excited to high-lying orbitals. Such Rydberg ions are million times bigger than ions in the ground state, and due to their size, they obtain very peculiar properties. For instance, they have very large transition dipole moments thus become very sensitive to microwave fields.

We seek a talented and highly motivated PhD student to join our experimental team on trapped Rydberg ions with the goal to investigate their capabilities in quantum sensing. The thesis will involve many aspects of quantum information and quantum sensing: trapped ions, Rydberg excitation, entanglement generation, microwave and laser manipulation of the electronic states.

The experimental PhD position will take place in the trapped ion group led by Markus Hennrich at Stockholm University and is part of the Swedish Graduate School in Quantum Technologies funded by the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology - WACQT.
