We offer a 3-years PhD position for a motivated researcher to join our work on spin qubits in silicon carbide (SiC). Colour centres in SiC have recently be shown to uniquely combine excellent spin properties with ultrastable optical transitions for spin-photon interfacing (see, for example, our collaborative work publish in Nature Communications 10, 1954). Our goal is to develop optically-active spin qubits directly operating at telecom wavelength, providing building blocks for the future Quantum Internet.
Where: the research will be carried out in the Quantum Photonics Lab at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh, UK), under the supervision of Dr Cristian Bonato. The Quantum Photonics Lab (QPL), jointly led by Dr Bonato and Prof Gerardot, works on quantum devices in different material platforms, such as diamond, SiC, “beyond graphene” 2D materials and III-V semiconductors. The lab hosts state-of-the-art facilities, including several cryostats, superconducting single-photon detectors, tuneable lasers and radio-frequency equipment for high-fidelity spin manipulation.
Who: we are looking for a motivated candidate, with a passion for experiments, to start (ideally) on 01/09/2019. Working on this project will provide the opportunity to collaborate with a large network of European academic groups and companies and to perform some exciting experiments at the frontier of quantum phyisics. Additionally, the student will develop valueable high-tech skills in fast electronics, photonics, cryogenics, microwave engineering, programming and data analysis.
Please contact Dr Cristian Bonato (c.bonato@hw.ac.uk) for inquiries (as soon as possible).
