PhD position in Theoretical Quantum Control
We seek an outstanding & enthusiastic PhD candidate to work on quantum control at the RMIT University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology. Following our recent success in demonstrating novel techniques for quantum control, this project will extend the current capability by adding new theoretical and numerical methods to improve the state-of-the-art performance of real-world devices.
The candidate will design, analyse, and implement novel techniques for controlling quantum systems under realistic conditions, which will eventually be tested on quantum hardware. They will learn a wide range of techniques from theoretical quantum control to high-performance computing and machine learning.
Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T)
CQC2T is focused on delivering world-leading quantum research to develop full-scale quantum systems – encompassing ultra-fast quantum computation, secure quantum communication and distributed quantum information processing. The Centre has more than 200 researchers across seven Australian universities, including RMIT, working in 19 coordinated programs and nine collaborative Work Packages. Along with 25 national and international partner organisations, the Centre forms one of the largest combined and focused efforts in quantum computation and communication in the world.
Quantum Photonics Laboratory
At the Quantum Photonics Laboratory (www.qplabs.org), RMIT University, we conduct a wide-range of research, from the engineering and control of quantum information and communication technologies to the exploration of quantum phenomena within biological, chemical, and physical systems.
- Investigate advanced methodologies for characterization of quantum systems.
- Design, implement, and analyse control strategies to enhance the performance of quantum systems.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop novel quantum control solutions for experimental quantum technology platforms.

- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field.
- A strong foundation in quantum computing, quantum mechanics and/or control theory.
- Basic understanding of machine learning techniques.
- Proficiency in programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.) and numerical simulations.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a keen interest in scientific research.
