The research group of Alexander Jahn at the Free University of Berlin, Germany, is hiring one PhD student and one postdoctoral fellow to begin in early 2023. Both 3-year positions are funded by the Einstein Research Unit Perspectives of a quantum digital transformation. Our group is closely associated with the Quantum Information Theory group of Jens Eisert, the Dahlem Center for Complex Quantum Systems, and the Berlin University Alliance comprising Berlin's three major universities, providing a broad network of high-level theoretical and experimental research.
Successful applicants will be working on the intersection of quantum information, high energy, and condensed matter theory. The group's goal is to understand holographic dualities, such as the AdS/CFT correspondence, using the perspectives and tools of quantum information and computation. We study entanglement and complexity measures for quantum many-body systems and their holographic descriptions, build tensor network models of holography, and seek to understand information-theoretic aspects of quantum gravity ("It from Qubit").
- The PhD position is open to candidates with a Master's degree (or equivalent) in physics and knowledge of advanced topics of quantum physics (e.g. quantum many-body theory, quantum field theory, quantum information). Strong analytical skills are required and prior experience in programming and numerical methods is preferred. Under guidance, the student is expected develop research experience, increasingly contributing to journal publications and representing the group at international conferences.
The position will be fully funded for 3 years at 75% of the E13 level (TV-L national salary scale). - The postdoctoral position is open to candidates with a PhD (completed by the start of the position) and research experience in a topic closely related to the group's goals, with relevant prior publications and presentations. Experience with international collaborations is preferred.
The position will be fully funded for 3 years at 100% of the E13 level (TV-L national salary scale).
Excellent English skills in speaking and writing are required for both positions, German skills are not necessary.
To apply, please send an e-mail to a.jahn@fu-berlin.de with your CV, including grades (PhD position) or publications and presentations (postdoc position) as well as any relevant prior experience. Please also describe your research interests and goals for the position, and provide contact information for at least one referee who is familiar with your work.
Applications will be considered until November 30, with the positions expected to begin in early 2023. The exact starting dates are flexible.
