We are seeking expressions of interest from prospective postdoctoral researchers and PhD students interested in working on fundamental problems in classical and quantum Shannon theory at the University of Brescia, Italy, within an ERC-funded research project led by Prof. Marco Dalai.
Research Areas
The project focuses on the mathematical foundations of highly reliable communication, with particular emphasis on classical and quantum information theory.
It encompasses a broad range of interconnected research directions, including, but not limited to:
- Quantum Shannon theory, classical-quantum channel coding, including channel capacities and error exponents;
- Communication protocols with feedback, entanglement assistance, or other resources.
- Zero-error communication in classical and quantum settings;
- Quantum state and channel discrimination, quantum hypothesis testing, and decoding under measurement constraints;
- Connections between classical and quantum information theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and algebraic methods.
Postdoctoral Opportunities
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in theoretical quantum information and a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
The positions offer the opportunity to pursue original research within the broad scope of the project, contribute to developing its quantum information research activities, and participate in the supervision of PhD students.
Previous experience in quantum Shannon theory is particularly welcome, but candidates with related expertise in theoretical quantum information are also encouraged to express their interest.
Starting dates for postdoctoral positions will be flexible.
PhD Opportunities
We also welcome expressions of interest from prospective PhD students with a strong background in quantum information, theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or related areas.
Prior research experience in quantum Shannon theory is not required.
PhD positions will be associated with doctoral programs in Information Engineering, starting in April 2027 and November 2027.
How to Express Interest
Interested candidates should contact Prof. Marco Dalai at marco.dalai@unibs.it, providing:
Postdoctoral candidates
- A CV
- A list of publications
- A brief description of research interests and experience
Prospective PhD students
- A CV
- Detailed academic transcripts for B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees
- A one-page letter of motivation outlining their background and research interests
Expressions of interest are welcome on a rolling basis.
Formal calls for applications will be announced separately, and admissions and appointments will be subject to the relevant institutional selection procedures.
