Several postdocs, researchers and/or engineers to build a quantum computer

Our ambitious goals at Chalmers are to build a quantum computer with 100 superconducting qubits, and to apply it to real computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such computationally hard problems are found, e.g., in optimization, machine learning, quantum chemistry, materials science, etc. Having contributed to starting the research field of superconducting quantum circuits, we are now scaling up our efforts to build a quantum computer.

This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology – WACQT – a 10-year initiative, started in 2018, for the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer.
Our team is also a partner of the internationally competitive OpenSuperQ collaborative project within the new EU Flagship on Quantum Technology.

Building a quantum computer requires a multi-disciplinary effort between experimental and theoretical physicists, electrical and microwave engineers, computer scientists, software engineers, and researchers within materials science and nanotechnology. We are developing the superconducting quantum devices and control circuits, firmware, and methods required to make the quantum computer reality. We work in close collaboration between the experimentalists in the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) and the theorists at the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQPL). The theorists help model the hardware as well as developing application use cases for the quantum processor. Our team currently has about 20 members – faculty, permanent research staff, post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, and master’s / undergraduate students – and is expanding.

Our department is host to the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanotechnology Laboratory cleanroom, and our measurement lab at QTL is well equipped with cryogenic and microwave electronic equipment – we are in a position to build and operate a quantum processor!

We are now seeking to fill several POSTDOCTORAL and RESEARCH SCIENTIST positions at the Quantum Technology Laboratory. We are also interested in experienced RESEARCH ENGINEERS. The research scientist and engineer positions can be permanent.

• Focus on process technology development and fabrication of a quantum processor consisting of up to 100 superconducting qubits with integrated cryogenic control circuits.

We are looking for expertise in nanotechnology and fabrication of micro/nanoscale electronic devices, electronics packaging, superconductor technology, and electrical characterization techniques. Knowledge of materials and surfaces is desirable.

• Focus on design and testing of the quantum and control hardware, with the aim to understand and to mitigate the sources of loss and noise that limit the performance of the qubit gate operations.

The ideal candidate has expertise in the design, modeling, and characterization of solid-state devices, electrical modeling and characterization techniques at dc and microwaves, numerical simulations, low-temperature techniques, noise processes, electromagnetism, and solid-state and quantum physics.

• Focus on quantum processor operation. The tune-up and operation of a quantum processor rely on rapid and precise control of the qubits using shaped microwave pulses. It also requires multiplexed quantum-state measurements using downconversion and digitization.

The ideal candidate has expertise in experimental quantum computing, microwave quantum optics, or related fields of experimental physics, (quantum) control systems and quantum information science, high-speed electronics, and microwave electronics.

About You
• PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Nanotechnology, or equivalent
• Alternatively, BSc/MSc with significant relevant experience
• Very good verbal and written communication skills in English
