Company Overview
At neQxt, we build full-stack ion-trap quantum computers, striving for excellent performance and scalability. With decades of expertise in ion-trap technology, neQxt was spun out of Mainz University, and it is headquartered in Germany’s Frankfurt Metropolitan area. Our team of leading talent from Europe and beyond covers the entire value chain, from the basic hardware to end-user software level. Join our passionate team of ambitious scientists, engineers, technicians and quantum enthusiasts, building top-tier fault-tolerant quantum computers together!
Position Overview
We invite experienced researchers in quantum computing to join us as Visiting Researchers for focused, short-term collaborations aimed at advancing our work in fault-tolerant quantum computing. This opportunity is designed for scientists who wish to contribute intensively to a defined project over a limited residency period. You will work alongside our core research team on topics such as quantum algorithms, quantum error correction, and co-designing scalable architectures across leading platforms (e.g., trapped ions, superconducting qubits, neutral atoms). The position is time-limited and outcome-driven — suited for accomplished individuals who can rapidly engage with complex research challenges and deliver tangible results in a condensed timeframe.
Qualifications
- Education:
A PhD in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field is required. - Specializations: Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Fault-tolerant quantum computing and quantum error correction
- Quantum Architecture Co-Design
- Scientific Quantum Simulation
- Quantum Algorithms
- Quantum Optics
- Condensed matter theory
- Tensor network methods
- Decoders for QEC codes
- Dynamical Codes
- Autonomous, approximate, bosonic or fusion-based QEC
- ZX-Calculus
- Quantum Software and Compiler Development
- Experience
- Extensive background in quantum information science, fault tolerance, quantum error correction, or quantum hardware co-design.
- Proven research record demonstrated through publications, patents, or technical leadership in relevant projects.
- Prior experience in independent research residencies, fellowships, or visiting appointments is an advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake a targeted research project aligned with neQxt’s FTQC roadmap.
- Collaborate with our internal teams to foster knowledge transfer, prototype solutions, or validate theoretical approaches for future experimental implementation.
- Deliver high-impact results — such as a publication, prototype, or proof-of-concept — within the defined project term.
- Present outcomes to both internal and external stakeholders, fostering continued collaboration beyond the visit.
Appointment Details
- Short-term residency: typically 3–9 months, depending on project scope and availability.
- Location: On-site engagement preferred; flexible arrangements may be considered based on project objectives.
- Support: Access to neQxt’s experimental and computational infrastructure, with dedicated collaboration resources.
- Compensation: Fully funded position; competitive and commensurate with experience and contribution.
Our Offer
Our QEC team is situated in the midst of a thriving research community comprising excellent academic groups in Aachen, Bonn, Jülich, Düsseldorf, Cologne, as well as industrial players like Microsoft and IBM. Cologne is a one-million-people city that is famous for embracing diversity and for its vibrant international scene, which make it particularly attractive for people who don’t speak German. The QEC team is currently composed of 50% international and 50% female researchers. We value your individuality and offer a flexible environment.
- High-intensity research focus: Contribute to a clearly defined and technically challenging problem in FTQC.
- Collaborative Environment: Join a team of passionate experts dedicated to advancing quantum computing through shared knowledge.
- Autonomy: Operate with significant independence, focusing solely on research impact and measurable outcomes.
- Short-Term, Long-Impact: Leave a lasting mark on an ambitious quantum program — without long-term administrative or institutional commitments.
Ideal Candidates
This position is intended for self-directed researchers who excel under clear constraints and high expectations. Candidates should be comfortable working independently, driving their own objectives, and contributing tangible advances within a limited timeframe. If you are an ambitious senior scientist seeking to make a targeted, visible impact in the field of fault-tolerant quantum computing, we encourage you to apply.
Application Process
To apply, please submit your CV and a short cover letter with a brief project statement outlining your proposed area of contribution, preferred term, and expected outcomes. Join us at neQxt for a focused research residency that challenges you to push the boundaries of what’s possible in quantum computing.
