Atoms have been combined for the first time into tightly bound molecules in large numbers at temperatures close to absolute zero.
This is good news for scientists who hope to have greater control over basic chemical reactions and for those who want to build a new
kind of computer, one based on mysterious quantum behavior.

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics invites applications for postdoctoral positions in the areas of quantum gravity, string theory, quantum information, cosmology, quantum foundations and particle physics. How heavy or how big can an object be before losing its quantum properties and obeying to the laws of classical physics? This question drives many research groups all around the globe. Answers still remain to be given as currently there are no systems which allow observing the expected tiny signatures of quantum effects in macroscopic objects. The novel system developed in the MPG Junior Research Group “Laboratory of Photonics” led by Dr. Tobias Kippenberg could resolve this problem.

ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences is a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona), devoted to the research and education of the optical and photonic sciences, at the highest international level. In the research group "Quantum optics and quantum information with single atoms and photons" led by Jürgen Eschner we study experimentally the interaction of single trapped, laser-cooled ions and atoms with single photons. We are equally interested in the fundamental properties of such systems and in their application for quantum technologies.
