The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Macquarie University (MQ) in Sydney Australia is making a substantial investment to grow its research capacity in quantum science and seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to a continuing position as Lecturer (level B) or Senior Lecturer (level C).
The Department comprises around 32 academic staff with international research profiles and world class facilities in quantum science and technology, photonics and laser science, and astronomy. We teach full undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics and astronomy with an emphasis on research-informed teaching and training graduates who are prepared for all kinds of careers.
Macquarie hosts four quantum science laboratories with facilities on campus and at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO, Lindfield). It hosts the Centre for Quantum Science and Technology (QSciTech) with expertise in quantum optics, quantum algorithms, quantum thermodynamics, integrated photonics, nanomaterials, topological order, and quantum foundations. The University is investing in staff and facilities for a Quantum Engineering Initiative committed to building quantum-enabled technologies and to training the next generation of quantum engineers.

About the role
The appointee will be a full member of the Academic Staff, performing teaching (40%), research (40%), and community engagement and service (20%) functions.
The appointee will be expected to conduct world-class independent and collaborative research in theoretical aspects of quantum optics, quantum condensed matter, and/or quantum information science. Collaborative work with experimental programs is highly encouraged.
The appointee will be expected to participate in supervision of postgraduate students and to apply for both external and internal research funds both independently and as part of larger research teams. They will participate in the activities of QSciTech and will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in both general physics at introductory levels and in their discipline area at higher levels. They will also contribute to the Department’s service and outreach functions within the University and beyond.
Essential selection criteria:
• A relevant doctoral degree in theoretical physics or substantial equivalent academic experience/accreditation and standing;
• A demonstrated record of an ongoing original research program in quantum optics, quantum condensed matter, or quantum information science in leading international journals;
• Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to attract research funding;
• Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to perform high quality teaching at university undergraduate level;
• Capacity and/or demonstrated ability to attract and to successfully supervise research students;
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff, and the community;
• Commitment to principles of diversity and equity in physics research and education

• A substantial record of publication of innovative and impactful research results
• A demonstrated record of success in attracting competitive research funding
• A demonstrated record of excellence and innovation in teaching

Salary Package:
• Lecturer (Level B) from $99,879- $118,174 plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
• Senior Lecturer (Level C) from $121,953- $140,246 plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
