We are actively seeking an exceptional applicant (Australian domestic applicants only) for a PhD scholarship at UNSW Sydney, with A/Prof Jarryd Pla. Participate in an industry-engaged research project and undertake a six-month industry placement at Diraq.

Diraq is a Sydney-based quantum computing company, delivering revolutionary quantum computing to the world, based on existing silicon chip technology. Quantum computing has the potential to solve problems of global significance that are currently impossible using classical information processing techniques. Applications for quantum information processing span many industries, including cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, chemistry and pharmaceuticals.

In order to tackle these problems, however, we will need to move well beyond the small-scale quantum processors currently available and into the regime of error-corrected and fault-tolerant quantum computers. Quantum technology that uses the spin of individual electrons in silicon CMOS quantum dots is one of the most promising for realising large-scale, fault-tolerant universal quantum information processing. However, to achieve this goal, advances in readout technology are required to enable resource-efficient, low-error and highly-multiplexed quantum bit (qubit) measurements.

Project focus and impact

This project will tackle challenges in the design, fabrication and integration of microwave frequency amplifiers that operate at the quantum mechanical noise limit to enable high-fidelity and multiplexed readout of silicon MOS qubit technology. This capability will support the scaling of CMOS quantum hardware towards fault-tolerant systems by developing innovative engineering solutions for quantum noise limited spin qubit readout. This project would suit: This project would suit a motivated electrical engineering, quantum engineering or physics student with strengths in quantum mechanics and microwave/RF design looking for a challenge in developing innovative and practical engineering solutions for cutting-edge quantum technologies.

Domestic students include Australian citizens, permanent residents, a person entitled to stay in Australia, or to enter and stay in Australia, without any limitation as to time and a New Zealand citizen. International students must either hold or be able to obtain a valid visa for the duration of the specified term. The scholarship offers a competitive stipend and generous allowances.
