PhD

This PhD project is aimed at developing highly sensitive methods for detection of magnetic fields with optically pumped magnetometers. The magnetometer will be based on laser-interrogation of room-temperature cesium or rubidium atomic vapor. The project will include work on designing a prototype magnetometer. Quantum techniques such as spin-squeezing can be used for improving the magnetic field sensitivity. Possible applications of this magnetometer include measuring bio-magnetic signals from the heart or brain.

Several PhD scholarships (both theory and experiment) are available through the Macquarie University node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems (EQuS) http://equs.org/. Each 3-year scholarship covers the national/international tuition fees (International: 42,720 AUD/yr), and provides an annual stipend of 27,082 AUD. The PhD provides support for travel and research costs and opportunity for frequent interaction with researchers and students in the other nodes of EQuS. Macquarie University is located in Sydney, Australia.

Six PhD positions in theoretical quantum optics and quantum information science are available at the Centre for Quantum Optical Technologies (QOT) at the University of Warsaw. Successful candidates will work in a diverse environment including theorists and experimentalists on fundamental properties of quantum systems, such as quantum coherence and entanglement, and their applications in quantum technologies, such as quantum metrology, sensing, communication, and computation.
