A PhD position is open in the atom optics group in Hamburg, Germany for studying the interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical high finesse (> 500.000) cavity operating in the regime of resolved recoil sidebands. Quantum communication networks are high on Europe's agenda, with particular focus being given to quantum memory or information storage. Meeting the challenge head on to make such information accessible to users is a team of scientists from Denmark who used two 'entangled' light beams to store quantum information. The research study, supported by the EU with a combined funding of almost EUR 16 million, is presented in the journal Nature Physics.

DESCRIPTION: Post-doctoral position at the Quantum Information Group of the University of Barcelona (Spain).

FIELD: The successful candidate is expected to have obtained a Ph.D. in Quantum Computation, quantum many-body physics or in the study of cold atomic systems. On top of this basic requirement, programming skills, deep knowledge of quantum field theory or a strong background in mathematics is certainly a plus.

Application deadline:

Monday, February 14, 2011

ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences, a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona, Spain), devoted to research and education of the optical and photonic sciences at the highest international level, is offering a postdoctoral position to a well-qualified, highly motivated and dynamic young scientist who wishes to enhance his/her scientific career in a friendly and stimulating environment. The successful candidate will be part of an emerging project carried out by Prof Hugues de Riedmatten's newly established Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms group.

Application deadline:

Thursday, December 30, 2010

ID Quantique will be organizing the third Winter School on Practical Quantum Cryptography in January 2011 in the Swiss Alps. The goal of this program is to introduce, to a general audience of physicists and computer scientists with little or no background in practical quantum cryptography, this exciting topic in a relaxed and stimulating atmosphere. The program also includes hands-on tutorials, as well key note lectures by renowned researchers Nicolas Gisin (University of Geneva), Renato Renner (ETH Zurich) and Vadim Makarov (Norwegian University of Science and Technology).
