The first implementations of quantum error correction are already emerging, but full-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation remains ahead. In addition to hardware advances, significant progress can be achieved through the codesign of quantum error-correcting codes, quantum algorithms (particularly for quantum simulation of condensed-matter systems), and quantum hardware. This will form the context of the PhD position.

The Quantum Algorithms Division at the Quantum Research Centre (QRC) of the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), in Abu Dhabi, UAE, is seeking highly talented and motivated post-doctoral or senior researchers to join the Quantum Enhanced Algorithms team, led by Dr. Thais de Lima Silva. 

Quantum computers will play a crucial role in the development and optimization of battery materials in the future. In this project, you will develop innovative quantum algorithms for the accurate calculation of materials properties. You will combine methods from quantum informatics and solid-state physics to describe the complex electronic and ionic processes in battery materials. New quantum algorithms will be tested for addressing topical questions in materials development for next-generation batteries.

In this project, you will benefit from the combined expertise in quantum algorithms and materials simulations at the institutes PGI-12 and IET-3. Thereby, Forschungszentrum Jülich will provide you with an ideal environment for your project with unique possibilities to access the latest hardware of quantum computers—directly on campus!

The Quantum Computing Hardware Laboratory at TII’s Quantum Research Centre (QRC) in Abu Dhabi is seeking talented experimentalists to design, fabricate, and carry out laboratory operations and quantum experiments on superconducting quantum computing hardware.

Your PhD project will be part of an interdisciplinary research project bridging theoretical physics and theoretical computer science.
In the course of this, you will work on

• implementing efficient simulators for continuous and discrete variable systems with noise based on Gaussian/stabilizer decompositions
• quantum error mitigation and correction for continuous variable systems
• evaluating and rigorously define the computational power of continuous variable systems
